Learning To Do Marriage Differently
Understanding God’s Goal for Your Marriage
Your marriage is intended to be your deepest, most intimate relationship – the place where two hearts become as one (Mark 10:8).
But let’s be honest – a great marriage doesn’t just happen. It takes work. Lots of work. Why? Because our most natural” way of interacting is to play TAG, a worldly way of relating that is all about protecting ourselves, rather than loving others. The game separates and divides us, thereby preventing the two from ever becoming as one.
In order for the two of you to experience the oneness that is God’s goal for you, you must be willing to do the hard work it takes to break out of your bondage to this destructive game.
The first step is to recognize the game.
Recognizing the Game
In TAG, the goal is to not be IT.
In the passive versions of the game, we avoid being IT by what we DON’T do – we remain fearfully quiet, walk around on eggshells, “forget” to bring something up, or choose not to pursue our vision, in an attempt to avoid being judged, criticized, or mistaken.
In the active versions of the game, we avoid being IT by what we DO do – we act like we need to be right, leave in a huff, defend ourselves, or blame/criticize others, in an attempt make somebody else IT.
And every time we play, we add one more brick to the wall that separates us. Sadly, once that wall gets thick enough, our marriage may very well come to an end. Not because we don’t belong together. But because we allowed the game of TAG to come between us.
The Good News is that your story does not have to end this way.
The Good News
We were literally created by God to love Him and one another. (Matthew 22:34-40)
That means that we don’t actually have to learn to love each other. We only have to learn how to QUIT doing the things that get in the way of that love.
As soon as you learn how to recognize and break out of the game of TAG, everything will get simple, again. Romance will once again begin to blossom. The love that IS our God (I John 4:8) will reappear, stronger than ever.
The instant you stop playing TAG, you will once again see your spouse through God’s eyes, as you did when the two of you first met. You will experience the thrilling power and the possibilities that you knew then.
Except, now you will know how to KEEP that love flowing. You can have the miracle of that renewed love. Forever. That’s The Good News!
Let’s have you Get Started on that path!
